On 9th August, 1917, away from all the activity further north as 3rd Ypres or Passchendaele continued to draw in more troops,11th Middlesex of 36 Brigade, 12th Division moved into the front line at Monchy-le-Preux near Arras in France. On the same day a large raid was carried out by the other two brigades of the division which inevitably resulted in enemy retaliation which destroyed some of the trenches on the brigade front. A large party of over 100 men were sent forward from 11th Middlesex to repair the damage but came under such heavy fire that they had to withdraw after an hour. Charles Green was one of those killed on this day.
